Course Overview
This course has been created specifically for those students sitting the NAPLAN examination in year 3, who want to improve their narrative writing skills. During the ten lessons, students will explore all the components necessary to write an excellent narrative. Students will be guided step by step through the process of plotting a well-constructed narrative that will impress the markers. Students will also learn to understand the requirements of the NAPLAN exam when writing a narrative.
Course Components
The narrative course takes students on a journey to discover all the vital components that must be included when writing an excellent narrative that will impress the markers.
Unit 1 – Audience
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to engage and influence the reader.
Unit 2 – Text Structure
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to structure a narrative with an orientation, complication, sequence of events and a resolution.
Unit 3 – Ideas
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to develop a narrative that focuses on a specific genre and includes a theme or coda.
Unit 4 – Character and Setting
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to develop a character that the reader can connect with, and a setting using descriptive and figurative language.
Unit 5 – Vocabulary
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to use a range of precise and effective words that match their language choice with narrative genre.
Unit 6 – Cohesion
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to use devices such as connectives that will ensure the story flows well without repetition.
Unit 7 – Paragraphing
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to structure a narrative with the use of paragraphs for change of time, event, or character.
Unit 8 – Sentence Structure
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to construct complex and compound sentences using correct spelling and grammar.
Unit 9 – Punctuation
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to use correct punctuation in their narrative.
Unit 10 – Spelling
By the end of this unit, students will be able to gain the necessary skills to use a range of difficult and challenging words that are spelt correctly.
